Vice Minister of Education Chen Jie attended the 2024 Global Education Meeting held from Oct. 31 to Nov. 1 in Fortaleza, Brazil, where he delivered remarks on China’s advancements in education, science, and talent development.

In his speech, Chen emphasized China’s commitment to fostering scientific literacy and innovation skills through expanded training in foundational, emerging, and interdisciplinary fields, particularly in digital and STEM disciplines. He highlighted China’s ongoing investments in higher education to improve infrastructure, raise quality, ensure affordability, and promote equity and inclusivity. Chen also expressed China’s desire to strengthen international collaboration through UNESCO to address shared educational goals.

The vice minister also engaged in discussions with UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Education Stefania Giannini about follow-ups to the establishment of the UNESCO international institute for STEM education in Shanghai.

Hosted by UNESCO and Brazil’s federal government, the 2024 Global Education Meeting gathered over 600 participants from 94 countries, including more than 50 ministerial-level representatives. The meeting focused on a number of topics related to Sustainable Development Goals, including “Science, Technology, Innovation, and Digital Transformation” and “Equitable Access, Quality and Mobility in Higher Education.” The meeting began with the launch of the Global Education Monitoring Report and concluded with the Fortaleza Declaration, which outlines strategies to promote equitable quality education worldwide.
