In the "World University Rankings 2025" released by Times Higher Education (THE) on October 9, 20 German universities made it into the top 200, ranking third behind the US (55 universities in the Top 200) and the UK (26 universities in the Top 200). Among them, 8 German universities entered the top 100.

The first place is Oxford University in Britain, and the second place is Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The highest-ranked German university was Technical University of Munich (TUM), ranking 26th, up 4 places from last year. Founded in the 19th century, TUM has 17 Nobel Prize winners since 1927, covering physics, chemistry, and medicine among other fields.

Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU) came in second, ranking 38th, the same as last year. Founded in 1472, LMU is one of the oldest universities in Germany. It has the second largest student body among all German universities, with international students accounting for about 13% of the total.

Heidelberg University came in 47th, founded in 1386, it is the oldest university in Germany. Nearly 20% of its students are international students, coming from over 130 countries. More than a third of its PhD students are international students. Heidelberg is known as the birthplace of German romanticism, and the old town and castle are the most popular tourist destinations in Germany.
